The Daffodil Walk for Cancer

The Daffodil Walk for Cancer was held on Wednesday 1st March 2006 to coincide with St David's Day. A good crowd turned out to support both Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Wirral and North Cheshire Prostate Cancer Support Group. The daffodils weren't quite ready in Whitby Park, but it was a pleasant walk with hot soup served back at the centre courtesy of The Greyhound in Saughall. In total £90 was raised for the two charities.

Prostate Cancer Support Group

The photograph below is from the first AGM of the Wirral & North Cheshire Prostate Cancer support group which met on Saturday 28th January morning from 10.00 am to 12 noon. The photo shows the distinguished guests and co-chairmen(standing). It was the first AGM of the group which formed on 1st February 2005.

About 70 members attended and guests included the Lord Mayor and Mayoress of EllesmerePort, Andrew Miller MP, Dr I.Syndikus Consultant Oncologist at Clatterbridge Hospital, Mr Ashdown and his wife, from the Berwick Masonic Lodge and Mike Lockett from PSA North of England.

The new publicity leaflet was officially launched into the public domain. Apart from the leaflet giving deatils of the Support Group, it is also intended to raise awareness among men to offer themselves for routine screening for prostate cancer.

The primary aim of our Group is to give support to fellow prostate cancer sufferers and their carers, but a further aim is to raise money for the Hospitals, for equipment they cannot obtain from the NHS. At this meeting the group officially launched their campaign to raise £15,000 for some equipment required by the new Brachytherapy and Cryo surgery unit which opened at Clatterbridge Hospital in February 2005. In this respect, it was extremely pleasing to receive £300 from Mr Ashdown as a donation from the Berwick Masonic lodge and also to receive a £50 personal donation from Mr Andrew Miller.

The meeting concluded with refreshments and a raffle which was well received, from which the Group made £163, prizes having been donated by the Committee. For more information about this group please contact the centre.
